This is an art called Pysanky, a traditional Ukrainian egg decorating art. my grandparents were born In Kiev and taught it to us as kids.
Its done by using a kistka or small funnel on a stick filled with wax and heated on a candle to draw over the egg and then dye in stages. you cover everything you want to be a white, then dye the next color cover, and then dye darker, and so on till you get to black, and melt it all off
its very time consuming and fun, although the ones from when I was younger are not so artistic
